yayoi kusama often talked about her mental ilness citing many hallucinations in childhood as a source for her polka dot obsession in these visions she would see spaces around her soley be consumed and obliterated by spots she began to experiment with this concept on mass scale by covering objects and people with colourful circles and doing performances at the heigh of avant garde and pop art in the 50s and 60s. she also began working with phallic shapes covering evryday objects with them or creating stand alone scultpures working out traumatiuc images her mother forced her to see by having her spy on her own father and his affairs despite being in the epi centr during one of the most popular and ell knwon art decade in history, kusqama struggled to gain compensation and financial health and seeing men in the scene copy her work and be paid handosmley for it she began to crack under the opressive stress when she saw another artist copy her infinity room intimate spaces she built with lights and mirrors she broke down complertley and actually jumped from her iwndow to commit suicidee she survuved and lived on to be one of the most celebrated artists of our time

yayoi Kusama’s work is something I’ve never felt the appeal of maybe due to personal preferences and stance when it comes to polka dots what I think is most effective in her work is her red and white colour scheme when incorporating her polka dots onto designs find this combination to be very visually pleasing and avant-garde.

when looking over her work one thing I find undeniable is her ability to transform a person’s mood maybe not through images as much but when you start to imagine yourself in her “infinity room” and polka dot-covered interiors, for example, you start to get a feeling of how being placed in these landscapes can impact your emotions not just mentally but creatively and when looking at my work it’s important to think about how I can do the same. having particular pieces create certain emotions is something that Kusama has inspired me to look at moving forward.
