Final Evaluation

When brainstorming ideas for my Part 3 project, I noticed that although I had several vastly different ideas, they all shared similar themes and emotions. All of my ideas had a common thread of "camp," which led me in the direction of my exploration. Once I had a solid understanding of the theme, I focused on bringing context to it by researching its origins and historical significance. My project remained the same from the beginning, and I feel that my strong understanding of the theme helped me maintain support and strength throughout the project.

I used my research to gain a better understanding of the emotion I was exploring, which enabled me to think about the theme more deeply when creating responses. Initially, I looked at the instances of camp I had collected and combined their concepts in ways that would result in a unique outcome. John Waters movies, particularly "Divine's" influence, were two of my biggest sources of inspiration during the beginning, although over time, I found myself taking more significant inspiration from historical references of camp. Here, I was able to portray the absence of camp in men's fashion by bringing ideals from the past and incorporating them into my current viewpoint.

For my final project, I wanted to make sure it was my most ambitious project to date and that it challenged me. This resulted in the use of a plethora of new methods and skills. I explored the use of unconventional materials such as hair, expanding foam, feathers, and hats. My first few attempts at the expanding foam resulted in lots of trial and error. However, towards the end of my project's completion, I had managed to get the hang of it, resulting in the wig being the perfect silhouette, which was more important than the hands' shape.

I employed different practices into my project this time. With the garment, I spent more attention on the intricacies of the garment, putting more dedication into figuring out how to get my design to the desired execution. I encountered multiple problems with techniques not playing out in the way I had hoped, but my dedication to this project motivated me to resolve the issues by extensively working on aspects I didn't like until I was pleased with them. For example, the hands had to be filed down numerous times before I was completely satisfied with their shape.

The plan I had set for myself to complete the project was deeply considered and resulted in a structure that, if followed, would see the completion of my garment in time for the deadline. However, although I followed this structure as closely as possible, I had failed to factor in my intensive level of procrastination and how easily drained I can become. These problems delayed several aspects of the structure, but the structure allowed me to keep my momentum. My plan was to get the most difficult parts out of the way to fully understand how much time the garment would need, instead of leaving it until the last moment to find out it was impossible to complete in time for the deadline.

Thoroughly reflecting kept me self-aware of my progress and the aims I was setting. In doing so, I was able to achieve artistic satisfaction with my design. For my final project, I wanted to make sure that my design was thoroughly exhausted and worked on to achieve a design I was happy with. Through my reflections, I was able to monitor and make sure that this was the case, ensuring that I was on par with reaching my targets that would help in moving the project pace. My most important reflections were in the early stages of Part 3, where the new way of working and disciplines I had implemented helped to mold the artistic way of working I had aimed to replicate. My most successful aspect of my garment would have to be its color palette, as this was such an important factor to take into account when designing a fashion piece under the theme of camp, as I had recognized through my research the importance of color when it comes to camp.

The least successful would have to be my details. I wish I had given more thought to the intricacies. I achieved everything I set out to explore; however, I couldn't have predicted the execution, something that I am extremely pleased with. As the foundation comes to an end, and my only plans for next year consisting of self-directed projects for my portfolio, this project has offered a great deal of inspiration. Moving forward, I want to look at creating more garments from my research, as the theme of camp offers so many possibilities for me, especially ones that fit my aesthetic as an artist. I had initially set out to create a video for my final project. Still, now that I have completed the project, I aim to create new garments that can be used in a video to end my theme with a fully realized vision and journey. If given the opportunity to add to my research, I would have liked to have taken a deeper dive into the biological nature of camp. Dedicate more time to looking into the eccentricity of male animals. Given more time with this project, I would have definitely liked to have expanded on the details and intricacies of the garment.
